Thursday evening was the worst!!! I went as always outside to close the chicken coop doors and say kind words to my sweet hens and rooster before they slipped in slumberland. As I went into the coop the rooster and one of the black hens where not in yet. Sometimes they are slow turning in when the weather is cool because the bug hunting is grand. With the rain came small frogs - one of their favorites.. So I called for them and watched the tall grass for movement. NOTHING! I was not going to panic but went back into the house put on a jacket and got the spot light. After combing every pasture, barn and even the forest still no sweethearts...
I had to close up the coop doors so the others would be safe for the night. I went out several times during the night hoping they would be sitting at the shop door or better yet the coop doors... No Luck..
I went to bed finally and repeated protection prayers and placed them safety in Mother Natures hands...
This morning early I went out and again walked all the property - no signs, no feathers, no nothing. The three hens this morning where very concerned and stayed next to my side. They talked up a storm with their questions of where was their coop buddies??? My heart was sad enough but to hear them clucking away at me as if to say "Mom, where are our friends, why have you not found them, Please go look again"...
I will hold out hope that maybe the pair of them are setting up a nest to start a family in - I will again walk to property later on today and look for any signs but I fear the worst... If you could keep them in your thoughts today - I know some might say they are only chickens but to me they are more...

I am hopeful they will return. Last year, when I went out to feed the horses I was care-taking, a neighbor's chicken came out of nowhere, glad to have found a friendly face. I helped walk her the half mile or so home and the rest of the flock welcomed her back gladly. They do get distracted when hunting is good.
I'm sorry Grace. I hope they return soon, safe and sound.
I hope you find them safe and sound. I know how you feel, I feel the same when my tortoise escapes. Always so glad and relieved when I get her back . . .
Thank you all for the kind words and heartfelt prayers - I walked thru the forest looking for feathers and such - nothing.. Then I walked the two pastures that are linked to my farm - still nothing. I still pray they will be safe...
my thoughts are with you Grace..
i would be sick with concern.
Grace,I don't think they are only chickens! I will be praying they come home safe with full tummies!

Ahhh thinking good thoughts your birds..I just tucked my own feathered friends in .
About 15 years ago I had a small flock of geese. They would wander down to the creek during the day then wander home come evening.
One day a terrible wind storm came up. I happened to look out the window to see the geese heading the wrong direction. They seemed to be disoriented in the wind.I quick grabbed my shoes and jacket and headed out to turn them around, but quick as a flash they were all gone.I searched for several days with no luck. I gave up on seeing them again.
One day as I was headed to town about 2 miles from my house, sitting next to the creek was one of my geese. We dashed down the bank and retrieved him. There was no sign f the others , but I considered finding one a miracle.
Hoping for a miracle for you too..
Susan
Thank you so much Susan for the wonderful story - I know mircles do happen we have had a share and then some here on the farm - I always have my heart open just in case.
Blessings
Hate to report still no sign of the missing sweethearts - did find some feathers in the woods which is not a good sign - lets hope they had a quick and painless end. I have enjoyed every minute with them and I hope they felt the same.
