Does Anyone Live Without a Microwave???

I can not believe the day I am having. I was sick all night long with some kind of body bug so I am running again on no sleep. Instead of whining about it I decided to get back to my cleaning frenzy - that is what I do when I am upset and boy have I been upset this week. The topper to my day was when I looked up and realized I had not eaten all day and it was going on 7:30 pm. My stomach was finally calm so I thought a poached egg and a warmed up pancake would do the trick. The eggs where almost done and I place my pancake on a plate and popped it into the Microwave. As I have done a million times I went to push the button and there was a horrible sound, a flash and a DEAD MICROWAVE!!!! Oh, I thought it is a breaker. So I went downstairs, checked the box - everything was O.K. I went back upstairs and plugged in a small machine into the socket and it worked so I plugged the microwave back in - Total Black on the screen.... CRAP.....

Don't panic - I scraped off the butter off the pancake and placed it in the toaster. Pop goes the toaster and we have dinner. As I sat there eating my meager dinner I wondered "Can I live without a Microwave"? I do not cook that much with it but rather heat up quick things, reheat stove cooked meals but most of what I use it for is some of my dyeing of fibers and yarns...

So I would like to run a pole if you please!!

How many of you could and do live without a Microwave?

How many of you would never live without a Microwave?

You ARE having a bad day. As much as I like to think I could live without a microwave... it just wouldn't happen... it's just way too convenient to have one!

Are you telling me that there is actually an item in your house for which you don't have a back up? I can't believe it!!!

I don't cook in my Microwave, however I do reheat leftovers and defrost if I am in a rush. I think I could do without it, you would just have to be patient and more organised. I will work on that so that when my Microwave goes 'boom' I will be ready

Well, I went without a microwave until about a yr ago. I bought one under the nagging of hubby to get one and you know what we use it for? Popcorn and heating up veggies. I bought an air popcorn popper and it takes the same amount of time as the microwave. I won't buy another when this one goes.

I got rid of mine a few months ago and I will never go back. Since we are going to solar we have get rid of unnecessary appliances. Plus I do not believe they are good for you.

We have a microwave. It will last forever since we don't use it. :)

I use mine all the time as I cook for several days and then reheat when I am busy. I could probably live without it but it would make everything take a lot longer to reheat which would mean more energy consumed. Sometimes we have to weigh time saved vs. expenditure. For me, it would be difficult to do without one.

Great Points Ladies!!!!

I gave some thought on paper and really the most I use it for is for my special dyeing processes for silk...

I too cook all at once for the week and reheat what I have made during the rest of the week. I was thinking how to reheat without using the oven which takes a ton of energy. Still processing and would love to hear more...

Some ways I reheat - I have a pilot light in my oven and put things in there to slowly heat. Works for keeping my husbands dinner warm. Everything else I put in a pyrex glass pan with a little water and put lid on. Put on stove top and it heats most things up in minutes. It is an adjustment at first but then becomes just as easy as the microwave.

That is a great way of doing it Jane.. I do not have a pilot light but the pyrex glass I can do... Many thanks for the information. I make popcorn in a heavy pan on the stove and I don't eat TV dinners or prefab foods that live in plastic bags for microwaving - so Jane I think we are very much a like in those ways. If you have any other tricks I would love to hear them - I love learning the ways of others...

Grace, we have one becuase Greg insists on it. But I think I could easily live without it. I, like you, cook from scratch and occassioanlly will warm something in the mw. But, a lot of times Greg will say he prefers things heated on the stove or in the oven. So, why do we even have a microwave??? I guess for popcorn...an expensive popcorn maker if you ask me!
